Here are some examples:
Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief
Perseus "Percy" Jackson is a fictional character, the title character and narrator of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. He is also one of seven main protagonists of the sequel series The Heroes of Olympus, appearing in every book except The Lost Hero, and appears in the ongoing Trials of Apollo series, making him one of the few characters to appear in all three series of the Camp Half-Blood chronicles. He has also been a narrator and protagonist in Riordan's Greco-Roman/Egyptian crossover stories, part of the Demigods and Magicians collection. The character serves as the narrator in Percy Jackson's Greek Gods and Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes, also by Rick Riordan. Here is a summary about the series.
Percy Jackson Books vs. Percy Jackson Movies
(book came before movie)
Book came out in: July 1, 2005
Movie came out in: February 12, 2010
Hanna: I personally think the book was way better than the movie in this case because Rick Riordan, the author, did a really good job in making the book hilarious and full of wonderful detail and description. I think the movie meant to be scary while the book was not.
Victoria: The movie was supposed to be the Lightning Thief, but it seemed like a mix of almost all of the books. The movie also wasn't that good in general. The dialogue and how the actors acted, just really didn't express the characters that well. There were many major and minor details that were in the book and not in the movie. The movie put in a lot of untrue events that never happened in any of the books. They also acted very serious in the movie. The parts in the book that were supposed to make you laugh all got blocked out by a whole bunch of SERIOUSNESS. In my opinion the event was supposed to be a silly joke. I actually laughed during the book, but the movie shut all that out.
Harry Potter Books vs. Harry Potter Movie
Harry Potter is the most miserable, lonely boy you can imagine. He’s shunned by his relatives, the Dursleys, that have raised him since he was an infant. He’s forced to live in the cupboard under the stairs, forced to wear his cousin Dudley’s hand-me-down clothes, and forced to go to his neighbor’s house when the rest of the family is doing something fun. Yes, he’s just about as miserable as you can get. Here is a summary of the series.
Hanna: I personally think the Harry Potter books are better than the movies because the books have more detail, and the book is described in a way that makes it less scary than the way the movie creators made it.
Victoria: I definitely agree that the books were REALLY detailed, it is really hard to add all the details into the book, let alone add them in a movie.
A Series of Unfortunate Events Books vs. "A Series of Unfortunate Events" TV show
Below is the A Series Of Unfortunate Events Wikipedia Summary:
A Series of Unfortunate Events is a series of thirteen children's novels by Lemony Snicket, the pen name of American author Daniel Handler. The books follow the turbulent lives of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire. After their parents' death in a fire, the children are placed in the custody of a murderous relative, Count Olaf, who attempts to steal their inheritance and, later, orchestrates numerous disasters with the help of his accomplices as the children attempt to flee. As the plot progresses, the Baudelaires gradually confront further mysteries surrounding their family and deep conspiracies involving a secret society known as V.F.D., with connections to both Olaf and their parents. The series is narrated by Snicket, who dedicates each of his works to his deceased love interest, Beatrice, and often attempts to dissuade the reader from continuing to read the Baudelaires' story.
Victoria: I definitely think they did a really good job of of mastering all of the context. I personally thought that when they were making the show, they would take away the narrating. One of my favorite things about the book was that he put in confusing words that the people reading probably would not know. Then he explained the words. It was amazing that they also did it in the movie!

Where the Red Fern Grows is a classic story by Wilson Rawls. The story is about a young boy named Billy. He has always wanted coon hunting dogs. He has to work hard to make enough money to buy the coon dogs. In order to make money he has to make coon traps and sell the skins at his grandfather’s store. If you want to know if he gets the pups you should read Where the Red Fern Grows. This story is sad but a real page turner.

Out Of My Mind is a great novel about a girl with cerebral palsy. She is unable to walk and talk. Yet she is still one of the smartest kids in her school, but no one knows it. She has a photographic memory. A photographic memory is where you can remember everything. Her head is like a camera except she can’t get rid of the memories. If you like a really interesting book then you should read Out Of My Mind.
Wonder is about a boy named August or Auggie. He has been homeschooled his whole life, but now he is going into fifth grade and starting school. Except, he does not look like everybody else. He has gone through several surgeries and was born with a facial deformity. If you like an amazing story then you should read Wonder. It also came out as a movie earlier this year. Keeper of the Lost Cities Book Review
By Alexa W.
A few months ago, I started a book series that my friend had begged me to read. The book series was titled Keeper of the Lost Cities, by Shannon Messenger, and I am now obsessed with it. I haven’t yet finished the whole series of six wonderful books, but from the ones I have read, I know the series is great. Ever heard of an eleven year-old girl in high school? This is the protagonist of the story, and her name is Sophie Foster. I wouldn’t call Sophie normal for that reason, but she was once “normal.”
After Sophie hit her head in a tragic accident when she was five, a special ability was triggered in her brain. Not the ability of being a genius, but the ability to read minds. If Sophie doesn’t even know what this is, how is she supposed to block all the random thoughts causing headaches? She may just figure out the day she finds an odd boy reading the newspaper with an embarrassing photo of her plastered across it during her class field trip at the museum. The boy points to the picture asking if it was the same person and starts shooting a lot of information at her about being a Telepath, which confuses Sophie. He explains how that is the reason she is hearing “human voices” when they aren’t even talking. But then he says something crazy, more like insane. The boy tells Sophie she is an elf. Sophie laughs at him. An elf? Like the ones who work in the North Pole, making toys? Thankfully, no. But even so, she thinks the boy is joking with her and tries to get away from him. She can’t seem to get away from him, and he decides to prove to her he is not kidding by light-traveling them to Eternalia, the main city of the elvin world. Later on in the story, Sophie meets new friends, including the boy she met at the museum, who’s name is actually Fitz. Strange name, huh? All the elves have strange names like those. For example her other friends’ names are Dex, Keefe, Marella, and Biana. Except for Sophie, of course. With her friends, Sophie learns new information about her background, the rules of the magical elvin world, the challenging classes of the world’s most prestigious school, Foxfire Academy, and the animals humans thought were extinct and other crazy animals such as alicorns (a unicorn with wings). All in all, Keeper of the Lost Cities is by far one of the best series out there, in my opinion. The book makes you feel frustrated and in awe, from the author’s amazing writing skills, at the same time. If I had to suggest any book series to someone it would most definitely be this one. It doesn’t have you bored for one moment. I can’t wait to continue reading the series! |
Spy School Book Review
By Alex M.
Spy School is a book by Stuart Gibbs. If you’re looking for a book with comedy, action and is worth a lot of AR points, keep reading.
Spy School is about a boy named Benjamin Ripley. He gets recruited to the spy school by the amazing Alexander Hale, the son of a famous spy Cyrus Hale, and father to the spy prodigy, Erica Hale. He is amazed to be a part of the CIA, but quickly learns that he was recruited as bait for an enemy organization called SPYDER. He is almost killed by an assassin but defends himself with a tennis racket. Will he survive? The book is level 5.3 and is worth 9 points. The author, Stuart Gibbs, has written 11 books (three series: Funjungle, Moon Base Alpha, Spy School) and I love his books. You can buy Spy School on Amazon for $7.19. I would recommend this to any reader who wants a good, long book. I hope you check this book out! More information can be found at his website: Stuartgibbs.com |
