Weird facts about sea otters
by Perrin F. & Alexa M.
Have you ever seen a sea otter? Sea otters are interesting animals. Did you know that sea otters are part of the Mustelid family, including weasels, badgers, and more. A sea otter’s body includes a long tail, wide webbed feet, small forepaws, closable ears, and a sleek body with dark brown fur.
In the wild, female otters live mostly 15-20 years, when males only live 10-15 years, however in captivity some of them live up to 23 years old!
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water. All sea otters have a favorite food. Some of the food they eat are sea urchins, crabs, clams, mussels, and other small animals and fish.
Sea otters are mammals and do not lay eggs. Otter Habitat says,”a male and female otter will mate and then, 60-63 days later, a litter of two or three pups will be born. Baby otters, also known as pups, are very small and only weigh about 4.6 ounces.” We are sorry to say that Harry Potter is not related to an otter.
An interesting fact that we learned is that there are more than 106,000 otters world wide! Otters are endangered animals so we need to protect them before they go extinct.

Smallest Monkey in the world!
By Ashby P., Juliet M., Sofie S., MARGOT R. & ANNABELLE M.
Do you like fuzzy, furry, little animals? If you do you should learn about pygmy monkeys, sadly you can’t buy one as a pet because they are banned from the United States due to the U.S. not having the proper climate.
Pygmy monkeys can be called many things. The scientific name is cebuella pygmaea. The original term is pygmy marmosets, but for short people call them Pygmy monkeys. They also can be called finger monkeys or pocket monkeys because baby Pygmy monkeys are so small they are almost the size of your finger and can fit in your pocket.
Pygmy monkeys can come in a lot of different colors such as grey, black, brownish gold, and even green. It used to be endangered but it is not anymore but that doesn’t mean that there are a lot of them left, this is called a concerned mammal. The average full grown adult Pygmy monkeys weighs about 4.20 ounces and are about 5.35 inches tall, that is really small! And that is also what makes them the smallest monkey in the world!

If you were to have one at home, you may want to feed your monkey cooked chicken (with no spices), your monkey might like some hard boiled eggs, or yogurt, they also like rice grains and nuts.
In the wild their main food source is made up of tree sap, plant leaves, and raisins. They also eat small insects such as grasshoppers, butterflies, spiders, ants, and moths.

Pygmy marmosets usually live in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, and northern Bolivia.
They live in trees near rivers or floodplains. They would rather live in rainforests and places where there are places to hide. But the thing is that the rainforests are getting smaller each day and they don’t know how many pygmy monkeys are still living. You would almost never find one in a wide open field or a place with very high temperatures above 70 degrees.

Skin, scales and feathers
by Storm J.
Did you know that mammals nurse their young? Another cool fact is the platypus is the only mammal that lays eggs. Did you know that the spots on leopards are called rosettes? Read on to find out more about mammals.
In the first paragraph I’m going to tell you about mammals. First of all, mammals use fur to blend into their habitat. For example, tigers have stripes to camouflage (to blend in) to trees’ leaves. Another example is cheetahs, cheetahs have spots to camouflage into the tall dry grass before they attack their prey.
Fur also keeps animals warm and dry. Mammals have two coats of fur; the undercoat and the guard layer. The undercoat helps animals stay warm and dry. The guard layer helps animals camouflage (to blend in), it also protects their body and the undercoat.

Animals with smooth skin are called amphibians and they all lay eggs. First of all, frogs breathe through their skin, but their skin has to be moist. That’s why they live near water. Frogs first breathe with gills, then they develop lungs over time. After the frog develops its’ lungs it lives in and out of water. When they’re out of water they stay near the water so they can stay moist.
Another example of an amphibian is the poison dart frog. The poison dart frog is also born in water and overtime develops lungs. The poison dart frog lives in the rainforest because it’s very damp and humid. Poison dart frogs are brightly colored to scare off predators. They can also spray a poisonous gas if predators come near. They also have a different smelly gas to attract mates. Now you know about animals with smooth skin, also known as amphibians.

Animals that have scales are called reptiles. Here are some facts about reptiles. All reptiles are cold blooded animals. One reason animals have scales is that it protects them like a shield of armor around their body, kind of like a knight’s silver armor. They also use their scales as camouflage (to blend). Scales are made out of the same material as fingernails (keratin), but a lot thicker. Scales also can be hard, soft, large, small, medium, bumpy, or smooth. Adult reptiles lay their eggs and then leave their eggs. So when baby reptiles are born they have to have strong instincts, because they won’t have their parents around to help when they’re born.
A cool fact about birds is they all lay eggs. Another cool fact is macaws live in the rainforest. Feathers are a weird adaptation. Birds are the only animals that have feathers. Feathers are strong and durable. Feathers are made out of keratin, the same material as fingernails. There are three types of feathers on birds. There's the down feathers, countour feathers, and the flight feathers. The flight feathers are soft and light, this helps it fly and balance in the air. The down feathers are thick, heavy, and soft and are at the bottom of their body to keep them warm. Finally the contour feathers are to attract mates. For example peacocks have eyelets to attract more mates.

All about sloths
By Piper N.
Sloths, the super cute, super slow animals. Sloths are mammals that means they don't lay eggs. Sloths have big long nails, and gray brown or tan fur. Sloths are one of the slowest mammals in the world. Did you know sloths come down once a week to use the bathroom? Sloths eat fruits and vegetables such as pears, apples, carrots and much more.
This is what a baby sloths looks like:
Sloths spend most of their times in trees and rainforests with their parents until they are two years old. Sloths can live up to thirty years in average. Sloths weigh from 5-12 pounds. Scientists say that sloths are slow because they want to conserve energy. Sloths may be cute but they do have a powerful and great defense system. If a predator comes near a sloth and tries to harm it the sloth can swoop the predator with its big giant claws.
Sloths are mostly found in rainforests in North America, South America and of course in zoos. Sloths fur can really come in handy, in rainforests {where they live} it rains, and their thick fur helps them from the coldness and rain.
More About sloths:
Aside from their surprising bursts of speed during emergency flights from predators, other notable traits of sloth include their strong body, the ability to swim and fact that they host algae on their fur. Extinct sloths species include many megafaunal ground sloths, some of which attained the size of elephants, well as some marine sloths. Extinct sloths are medium-sized arboreal {tree dwelling} residents of the jungles of central and South America. Two toed sloths are very dangerous in the wild.
Can you believe these super cute two toed sloths are dangerous! More like dangerously cute! It's is all for protection after all.
In conclusion, the mammal sloth is an amazing animal and has a great defense system!

Endangered Species
By Phoebe C.
Do you know about the Javan Rhino and the Amur Leopard? They are both endangered animals. Here are some facts:
Amur Leopards:Did you know that there are less than 40 Amur Leopards left? These massive cats weigh 54-110 pounds, and they are a little more than two feet tall. These leopards live in Far Eastern Russia. They can live up to 20 years. They live in both snow and heat depending on the season. One reason the Amur Leopards are critically endangered is because of humans destroying their homes.
|
Javan Rhinos:Did you know that there are less the 48 Javan Rhinos left in the world? There normal life length is 35 to about 40 years old. The Javan Rhino is an herbivore and mostly eats shoots and other plants. The Javan Rhino lives in many places including India and many other locations. One of the many is the Ujung Kulon National Park. This rhinos are endangered mostly from being hunted by humans for their horns. The Javan Rhino only has one horn.
All in all, I think that these animal are very interesting and that they should be protected. |
Bernese Mountain Dog
A great dog for anyone
BY Rhett K.
Personality
A Bernese Mountain Dog’s personality is very happy and friendly. A Bernese Mountain Dog will play with you for a long time but once they're tired they will just lay at your feet for usually 5-10 minutes 0not letting you move. After that they go slump off somewhere else and pant. A Bernese Mountain Dog will eat just about anything so when they eat, you’ll get some love or you get knocked over! It depends on how big your dog is. Lastly, a Bernese Mountain Dog is not a big fetcher but if you give him a ball, he’ll bite it to pieces in about a hour. Over all, Bernese Mountain Dogs are very happy pets. Heath
A Bernese Mountain Dog's health is very important. A Bernese Mountain Dog can even sometimes eat chocolate and they still won't get affected by it (but you still might want to see a doctor if he/she does eat chocolate). A Bernese Mountain Dog will do anything to get food but don't feed him/her to much or he’ll get fat. A Bernese Mountain Dog’s diet consists of dog food (preferred chicken, meat, and fish). A Bernese Mountain Dog has one of the shortest lifespans of all dogs because of their size. |
Owner Responsibility
A Bernese Mountain Dog needs a lot of attention and if you don't want him/her to knock you over. A Bernese mountain Dog isn't a very active dog so you don't necessarily need a backyard. But here are three things you do need:

Can You Believe They Used to Be Lions?
By Sydney G.
The evolution of the average house cat is a strange history. Many scientists used to think the ancient Egyptians domesticated the first cats around 36,000 years ago, but now recent discoveries make scientists believe that the common domestic house cat originated in the Fertile Crescent in Iraq around 10,000 years ago. Scientists suggest cats started hanging around humans to take advantage of the mice that lived there, and the scraps they were fed. Scholars believe that the domestic cats’ sole ancestors are the Felis silvestris (the wild cat), but they cannot be certain. The Felis Silvestris is also not confined to one corner of the world. This species lived throughout Spain, Mongolia, South Africa, and even Scotland. Some researchers have even put out the thought that cat domestication occurred in many different places around the world, with each domestication creating a different breed, which would add up to the many different breeds of house cats we have today.
In 2000 one researcher went out to answer the question by taking DNA samples of wild cats and domesticated cats from southern Africa, the Middle East, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Azerbaijan. They actually only narrowed it down to one place, the Middle East!
Now that they knew the answer of where the domesticated cat came from, they needed to figure out when. To get a sense of when the house cat originated they had to look back at some archaeological records, and one new find has proved very informative. In 2004 a man named Jean-Denis Vigne of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris reported a grave of a person with an unidentified gender buried about 9,200 years ago, with a smaller grave 40cm away containing an eight month old cat laying in the same position as what seems to be it’s “owner.” So there you have it, the great, great history of the domesticated house cat. |
Intriguing Animals
BY SYDNEY G.
All over the world there are strange looking animals that you didn't even know exist! So I ask you, dear reader; what are the most intriguing? That's what we are going to find out today. I have found several animals, whose looks and abilities might surprise you, so here are four different fun, strange, and slightly frightening crazy animals.
Axolotl
This is an axolotl. The axolotl is found in the deep dark caves of
Mexico. Many people call the axolotl a “walking fish,” but it's not a fish, it's
an amphibian! Since wild axolotls never see the light of the sun, they are
blind, and can even regrow limbs!

comedic & interesting Dogs
By Skylar B., Isabelle D. & Seaenna H.
When people think of a dog they normally think of a fluffy, little puppy, but dogs can look really, really funny and weird. In this article you will learn about some very interesting looking dogs. So sit back and enjoy the article.
1. Bull Terrier One of our comedic dogs is a bull terrier. The bull terrier has a few names. They are: English Bull Terrier, Bully, White Cavalier, Wedgehead, a Gentleman's Companion, and Gladiator. Their lifespan is usually 10-15 years. Fun Factoids: - There is a 20.4% chance that a pure white bull terrier may be born deaf and a smaller chance for colored one. - They look like they have egg shaped heads when seen from the front. |
2. Puli
The Puli is a small version of a Hungarian herding and livestock guarding dog. The Puli is mostly known for its long, corded coat and happy attitude. If you ever see a group of these amazing looking dogs you can yell out, “Hey there’s a group of Pulik!!” It was introduced to America 1,000 years ago by the Magyars from Central Asia. The Puli can live 12-16 years. They weigh 22-33 lbs, and are 14-18 inches tall. Fun Factoids: - They are very smart and active. - They are not indoor pets. - If a Puli gets enough exercise it can live in the city. -Pulís have speed despite their bulky appearance. |
3. Chinese Crested
The Chinese Crested originally was bred in China. The breed was a mix of the African Hairless Terrier and the Mexican Hairless Dog. They can live for 10-14 years. They weigh up to 12 lbs, and are 11in. to 1 ft. tall. Fun Factoids: -They have four nicknames: Crested, Puff, Curtis, and Powderpuff (Think like Power Puff Girls!). |
