Germany Then and Now
By Cole F.
Germany is the heart of Europe. It is located in Europe and its boarding countries are Denmark, France, Belgium, Italy, and Poland. Germany has a mix of good and bad history.
Unfortunately, part of Germany’s bad history is that they were involved in both World War I and II. Their good history is that they had huge empires called Reich’s. The first Reich was The Holy Roman Empire. The second Reich was Kingdom of Bavaria and the German Empire. The third Reich was called The Nazi Reich or Deutches Reich.
After WWII, Germany was split in half, creating East Germany and West Germany in 1949. The Soviet Union, France, the United States and the west side of England, controlled East Germany. In the 1960’s the Soviet Union built a wall separating East and West Germany so no one could go in or out of East Germany. Soviet guards were ordered to shoot anyone who tried to cross the wall from East Germany to West Germany.
Over 500 people died trying to cross the wall.
The wall came down in 1989. The coming down of the wall caused East and West Germany to be united and allow freedom to everyone crossing the border. There is a museum called The Museum Haus AM Checkpoint Charlie which exhibits the history of the Berlin Wall. You can learn more about the museum here: http://www.mauermuseum.de
Now Germany has an amazing economy and great culture. They use the Euro as their type of money. Nowadays, one Euro is equal to $1.40 US dollars. Germany’s traditional clothing is Lederhosen. These are shorts worn with suspenders.
Below are some useful German phrases to know if you plan to travel to Germany. Please note, W’s in German are pronounced like a v.

I love swimming. I love swimming because it is fun when you practice diving and when you become first place in a swimming competition, I love swimming when you break your record holding your breath. I also enjoy it when you get an award, and the time you go to a higher level! In conclusion, I think swimming is an awesome sport to do and watch.
Isn't it fun when you don't have to get dressed to go to school? Just roll out of bed and head to Bel Aire in your jammies! "Comfy and Cozy" is a good look while students learn.
