BEL AIRE NEWS
By Ms. McDonald & Mr. Davis
This year, Mr. Davis’ 4th grade class and Ms. McDonald’s 3rd grade class have teamed up again to design a mural for Bel Aire! Our classes believe in beautifying the space around us, so we came together to study the universal theme of Exploration. We all brainstormed the ways exploration has taken place over time and after we got as many ideas as we could on to paper we categorized them into seven groups: Early Explorers, Thought/Mindfulness, Deep Sea/Outer Space, History, Art/Imagination, Technology, and Health/Medicine, .... After that, the research began! Students were split into groups based on their desire to dive deeper into a certain subject area, and used multiple resources to gather as much information as they could. They learned so many new, interesting facts while working in their groups.
Next came the task of taking all our newfound knowledge and finding a way to transform it into a design for our mural. Our muralist, Ms. Kim, traveled to Bel Aire and taught a lesson on how to conceptualize notes and facts into art. We discussed many themes for murals and voted on a “lens” concept. This foundation allowed us to share ideas and fill Ms. Kim in on what designs would best capture all our great research. We made slight modifications and changes until we felt like everything was featured! The final draft was traced on the wall at the end of the lunch tables and we were able to start painting. We love our mural and what it represents and we can’t wait to have it finished so its brightness and color can be shared with our Bel Aire community.
